Gizela Šabóková Bio

The sculptural glass and painting works of Gizela Šabóková are distinguished by a vigour and emotionality concealed in the depths of an apparently rough, unpolished form. It delineates only the most basic signs for communication and avoids superfluous decorativeness. Šabóková makes use of the transparency of glass as a means of expression for sincere and profound personal reflection.

In her work of recent years she often chooses to depict the motif of the figure. She uses the technique of brutal injuring of the glass by means of a structure carved with a diamond saw, which creates a fascinating, fragmenting play of light in contrast to expressive modelling. By the intensity of its expression of inner content, her sculptures belong in contemporary Czech glassmaking to the most emotive work, focusing on the essence of the human experience of the world in all its joyful and terrifying aspects.

Sabokova has been the recipient of several awards including the 1994 Masaryk's Academy Price, Czech Republic, the 1997 Salvador Dali Award, Czech Republic, and the 2000 Grand Prize “Vessels,” Koganezaki Glass Muzeum, Japan. Her works have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States. Sabokova’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Applied Arts, Prague, Czech Republic; American Craft Museum, New York, United States; and Jokohama Museum of Modern Art, Jokohama, Japan, among many others.
