Marián Volráb

The works of Czech artist Marian Volrab have an intensity of expression that does not depend on an elegant outer appearance; rather, the role of glass consists of the meaningful subtexts of this material filled with contradictions.

Marián Volráb Bio

Marián Volráb is among the artists whose glassmaking is closely tied to parallel painting work. Volrab’s work is characterized by the reduction of the superficial effects of glassiness and the use of cold work techniques such as engraving on the surface of the sculptures. This combination of mutually balancing aspects could be described metaphorically as “darkness in glass – light in paintings.”

Outer roughness, significance of forms, and suppression of effects are elements which allow Volrab to express an inner admission of the experience of a whole spectrum of feelings: from melancholy and hopelessness to humility in relation to the fate of the universe. Volrab’s work is not lavish in the beach of effect, but rather the intensity of expression through the material’s meaningful subtexts.

Volrab’s works have been exhibited in several galleries and museums throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. His works can be found in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic; Gallerie Interntationale du Verre, Biot, France; and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
