Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová Bio

Stanislav Libenský, born in 1921, and Jaroslava Brychtová, born in 1924, are considered to be the most influential figures in modern glass art. Their collaborative work on monumental sculptures with a unique concept of the formation of internal space signifies a fundamental reassessment of the role of glass in artistic sculptural work. They redefined the way of contemporary thinking regarding work with glass. Libenský was a professor at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, and until 1987, he had a hand in nurturing more than three generations of important Czech studio glass makers.

While Libenský and Brychtová’s work underwent several developmental stages, there was a constant emphasis on the use of the “expressive possibilities of glass.” They had a thorough knowledge of the material’s characteristics – its fragility and massiveness, its color saturation and transparency, and its sensitivity to light and reflective qualities. Their work is built of ideas, convictions, and emotions, all while simultaneously attractive. Through Libenský and Brychtová’s teachings, they were exposed to new, less traditional ideas and approaches to glassmaking, and they were able to maintain an international perspective at a time when information was unavailable.

The work of Libenský and Brychtová has been collected by public institutions world-wide, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth; Prague National Museum, Prague, Czech Republic; Museum Bellrive, Zurich, Switzerland; Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Hokkaidō Museum of Modern Art, Sapporo, Japan; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; Rijksmuseum Amsterdam; Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California; and Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio.
