Israeli artist Boris Shpeizman looks for ways to combine traditional glassblowing with contemporary art practices. He does not "work" with the glass, but rather "tames" it. Blending the soft, sensual characteristics of glass with the harshness of metal, he is able to maintain a beautifully balance contrast in each of his works.

Boris Shpeizman Dr. Boris Shpeizman was born in 1951 in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the age of 17 he started studying dentistry at the St. Petersburg Medical School, where he became an activist in a movement for human rights and democracy. As a result, he was under risk of arrest and thus used the first possible opportunity to immigrate to Israel. After a few years of working as a dentist he started to paint and then tried sculpture. He began to study at the Bezalel Academy of Arts in the department of Ceramic and Glass Design and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005. Subsequently, he closed his dental clinic to start working as an artist and devoted himself to glass blowing.

In his work, Shpeizman's main goal is to find ways to intertwine traditional glass blowing with contemporary art. He does not "work" with the glass but rather "tames" it. The transformation of glass from its hot, glory, raw and liquid state into stiff, cold and fragile substance symbolizes, in his eyes, the full life cycle. Shpeizman finds that glass blowing is very sensual and through his works he tries to present the passionate and voluptuous side of blown glass.

Shpeizman currently works as an independent artist in his studio in Tel Aviv and also as a lecturer at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. During his relatively short career as a glass artist he was awarded many international prestigious scholarships including a scholarship from the Pilchuck Glass School and the CGCA Fellowship Program. He also won several awards and his works have been presented in galleries and museums both in Israel, England and the United States.
